JellyBean custom rom for PICOpad GFI

Finally I’ve got the PICOpad GFI with the default software build number 20121027 in hand. As you may see from my last custom ROM PICOpad GFI article before, I was build the custom rom using the old device (with software build number 20121026) that had a different type of WLAN with this new axioo release. Not just that, the back camera, front camera and also LCD type were different. The problem appear when user with new device release (20121027) flashing their device with that custom rom for old device release, then WLAN, bluetooth and camera was surely dead … so I have to made a new custom ROM for this device release.

GFI-cwmRather than using ICS, this time I build on Jelly bean 4.1.1 release, still same cooked using dsixda kitchen with almost same as previous :

  • 6 rows x 4 columns 200 dpi lcd density (most comfortable for me, not too tiny for my old eyes)
  • sysctl tweak for increasing internet network performance (basically it’s a common network ip4 tweak from klixs, but it is working good on my galaxy nexus custom rom)
  • some battery performance tweak (forgot where i get this from, only copy pasteing from my tomboy, sorry)
  • some dalvikvm performance tweak (forgot too where i get this from, sorry)
  • some gps performance tweak (from here)
  • rooted with su, busybox, and Superuser.apk included (from here)
  • no more bloated GOlauncher
  • some custom artwork
  • deodexed apps and framework from stock rom

…. so if you had this kind of device with software version 20121027 release, here we go the custom ROM :

for 20121027 release : picopad_gfi_20121206_jfdesignnet_6628_201212_0934

MD5 : 2387e5bdd5c15764141297d259e5f48f

… and for you on device with 20121026 release, here is the link

for 20121026 release : picopad_gfi_20121206_jfdesignnet_6620_201212_0952

MD5 : b520276a8343ad6f846a1721b5a8fba5

And here is the steps to flash this custom rom to your axioo picopad GFI :

Requirement and Preparation :

  • Read this thoroughly :
Your warranty is now void !!!
I am not responsible if you brick your phone, get stuck in a bootloop, or if your phone grows arms and tries to kill you. Flash at your own risk!
Please do some research if you have any concerns about risk of flashing a custom rom before continuing! YOU are choosing to make these modifications, and if you point the finger at me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you!!
If you have any other objection, don’t bother to comment, just close this page!
  • This custom ROM is not for noobs, it is not for faint hearted, because in this article I will not explain how to get CWM recovery for your picopad GFI. The process and tools how to get cwm recovery is somewhat winblows centric, and i don’t like either to discuss nor explain, so you must find yourself a way how to get those CWM to your device. At least, I can show you the way, here is the path to go there : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1825722 . You may also visit this site for other useful tools and info : http://frans.web.id/2012/12/cwm-recovery-untuk-picopad-gfi/

Flashing Process :

The steps to flash this custom rom is pretty straight forward :

  • Download the custom rom from link above and copy it to the root of your sdcard, you may check it first with your file manager to confirm it was there. There are two sdcard storage on picopad GFI so you must know it’s at the internal sdcard or external sdcard.
  • Boot into clockworkmod CWM recovery mode by turning off your phone, hold down Volume + button then press power button, hold them both until you see axioo logo appear then release it. Wait a sec or two … then you’re now in cwm recovery mode, you can navigate it through the menu using volume + and – button, and to executing the highlight menu you can press power button.
  • BACKUP your stock rom and data using nandroid backup first !!!
  • Choose Wipe Data / Factory reset and execute it
  • Choose Wipe cache partition and execute it
  • Go to Advanced menu, choose Wipe Dalvik Cache and execute it
  • Go back to main menu, and choose Install Recovery from sdcard menu and execute it
  • If you were put the custom rom on the internal sdcard, then choose Install from internal sdcard, otherwise choose Install from external sdcard. Navigate to the custom rom location and execute it. There will be a confirmation once again, and of course choose Yes.
  • After the installation completed, go back to main menu and choose Reboot System Now

Here is the result after flash :

GFI-jb-homescreen GFI-jb-onetimeinitializer GFI-jb-about

There also no problem with WLAN, Bluetooth connectivity, front and back Camera :

GFI-jb-WLAN-BT-on GFI-jb-camera-FR GFI-jb-CDROM

Enjoy your PICOpad GFI !

  • Sammy

Downloaded and flashed. GREAT JOB!! WONDERFUL!

  • tukull

well, 2 custom ROMs out already,

please enlighten me, what’s the major difference with 4.0.4 and 4.1.1 ?

performance increase, better UI, better graphics drivers, perhaps ?

FYI I just swapped my GFI’s stock ROM with your picopad_gfi_20121026_jfdesignnet_011212_2219 ROM.

So far so good, and it’s been rooted of course 🙂

    • @tukull

well, the major difference maybe on the inside. technically you may see wikipedia for details :
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_version_history
from user experience i see many improvement in ui design and performance from ics to jb on my gnex, but honestly the big improvement for me is from gingerbread to ics. from that to now the ui is pretty neat and slick.

  • Sammy

i don’t get it, opening titanium backup not asking for superuser, root checker says rooted, but TB and ES File explorer cannot acquire root access. what’s wrong?
su update also not working, fixer says signature fail
    trying to re-flash now…

    • Sammy

      Finally success!
I was on ori stock rom 20121206 when upgrading to this rom. flashed CWM recovery and install from zip card.
Superuser installed but cannot grant root access. Unrooting with Bin4ry v.18, reboot, then re-root using Bin4ry v.18, now I got full root access!
right now i just need a way to fix invalid imei…

      • @sammy

wohooo, glad to hear you sorted out.
i just know the Bin4ry v.18 from you, great script!

for erased imei you may visit itclinic for re writing, my hands are tied on this … sorry.

  • smich

Hi, can you please upload them on mediafire? this link keeps 403 after some MBs 🙁

    • Hi smich,
I can’t open mediafire from my connection, blocked.
      anybody can help smich ?

  • Sammy

    Need your help (again?).
somehow I made a mistake with partitioning, and stuck in bootloader (2nd boot screen not entering system).
I only have stock 4.0.4 20121026 rom, so I re-formatted (full flash) to that rom.
When I try to install this custom 4.1.1 rom from CWM, i got stuck in boot loop.
4.0.4 partition is different with 4.1.1.
i got 4.1.1 nandroid backup, but i cannot use it with spf tools to modify partition.
    can u help me?
(or at least give me a full flash rom 4.1.1 to be used with spf tools…)

Thx a lot and Merry Christmas to you…

    • Hello sammy,

did you trying to get rid off the usb storage and trying to create 2.5gb internal storage? 😀
currently I’m home for Christmas and don’t have access to the file you ask, so i’m afraid you have to visit itclinic for that full rom.

Thanks for the heads up and Merry Christmas too.

  • Thank you for your releases.
And if you have the opportunity to create custom ROM Jelly bean 4.1.1 with the rear OmniVision OV5647 camera and MT6620 module
Original firmware for the camera OV5647 – here:
    https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B4WDZskDFV9IeXJIcWU1QWRhZ1k

    • thanks s_bd, i’ll take a look 😀

  • inoenk

    Hi,
I have my GFI with 4.0.4 20121026 stock rom, and with 2,5 GB internal memory scrip work on it, is it Ok if I flash with this Cosrom? and what about the 2,5 GB internal memory? tank sin advance..

    • Hello inoenk,
actually, i did not yet repartition on gfi for 2.5Gb internal memory, so i cannot tell,
but honestly, from my custom rom script installation, it never touch that internal memory emmc partition, only system and data partition.

btw, from where did you get those script to create 2.5Gb internal memory ?

  • Sammy

@inoenk No u can’t, 4.0.4 have different partition size with 4.1.1 even without customized internal memory script (2,5gb internal memory) you will get bootloop flashing this custom rom from 4.0.4 rom. u must upgrade to stock rom 4.1.1 first, then flash this custom rom. internal memory resizing script (2,5gb) will not work in 4.1.1 rom

@jf i’m still waiting if u have stock 4.1.1 full rom, hehehe… btw, for imei problem, i got a special apk to write imei on picopad gfi, so imei problem is gone now 😀

    • hello sammy,
thanks for the info about the partition size.
yes, actually i made the custom after flash with stock 4.1.1 by my friend.

right now i really don’t have time to investigate this partition problem, but i’ll help you with 4.1.1 stock rom as soon as possible.

  • yes, me too waiting this 4.1.1 stock rom, **males ke klinik 😀

    • inoenk

I got that scipt from picopad gea Facebook groups,
It would be nice if this script included in your custrom
Btw, is the script Will working in your ics custrom?

  • inoenk

@JF, I got that script from Picopad Gea Facebook Group, its would be nice if you can included thats kind of script in your custrom.
Btw, is it posible this script work in your 4.0.4 custrom?

@Sammy, i still confuse, this custrom cannot work to my GFI since there is 4.0.4 stock rom work on it. So.. how to flash this room to my device? Cos i dont have JB stock rom?

    • Sammy

@inoenk, you must do full flash (rom format) using 4.1.1 stock rom. I’m currently uploading it to my skydrive shared folder. I will inform later when completed.

@jf, bad news bro, the stock rom u gave me is not 100% compatible. camera is not working with this version… i dunno what’s wrong. wifi & bluetooth is fine. even when I flash your custom rom, camera still not working.

  • Norm

@Sammy, i also needs your jb stock rom, waiting your upload..

    • Sammy

here’s the stock 4.1.1 rom for picopad gfi
      http://sdrv.ms/Yj15z7

my phone is dead, i must bring it to IT-clinic anyway. Hopefully they can restore it…

      • Inoenk

@sammy, @jf, do you have ics stock rom for this device? Just forgot to backup before flashing.

  • Norm

    @Sammy, thanks, downloading…

  • @sammy: my cam not working too, since I flashed mine with 20121026 ROM and CarPad Note5 F6 ROM…. downloading this JB now, hopefuly all will be well 🙂

    • @jf: many thx!
I remember doing some random pick at SPMultiport, so i think it will be overwritten with the latest stock rom from @Sammy link. Anyway, after flashing with this rom, my cam still show nothing, but it’s a better progress, before it just said error.

And yes, I have to switch between arch and 7 to do these flashing stuff 😀

      • @jf: very big thanks! Flashed with @Sammy links fw, change the driver (cam, lcd) with SP-MDT and your note, and all is now working good…. 😀

        • Wohoooo … I’m happy for you smich … I’m happy 🙂

  • Hello all,

first, i cannot reply and support you promptly, so … sorry for the delay.

Read a lot of problem with camera and partition issue here, but i’ll try to answer one by one.

    from inoenk :
@JF, I got that script from Picopad Gea Facebook Group, its would be nice if you can included thats kind of script in your custrom.
Btw, is it posible this script work in your 4.0.4 custrom?

noooo, don’t do that ! it will not work, each device have a different partition size and node name, it’s different between GEA and GFI.
i don’t have the device right now, but i promise i will take a look at it if i got one.

    from sammy and smich :
@jf, bad news bro, the stock rom u gave me is not 100% compatible. camera is not working with this version… i dunno what’s wrong. wifi & bluetooth is fine. even when I flash your custom rom, camera still not working.
@sammy: my cam not working too, since I flashed mine with 20121026 ROM and CarPad Note5 F6 ROM…. downloading this JB now, hopefuly all will be well 🙂

@sammy : it is 100% for that device and it should work, you just forgot to set the correct setting for the camera during flashing.
@smich : you CANNOT fix camera by flashing the custom ROM!! You must use SPMultiport tools to flash the stock rom then choose the type of your camera (back and front) The information of your camera and LCD type will save into uboot and NVRAM, and it will stick to your device as long as you did NOT rewrite the uboot and NVRAM. The custom rom cannot and never write uboot and NVRAM.

Like I said earlier, this should fix the camera problem :
    1. Flash the stock rom using SPMultiport and fix the camera to appropriate type and make sure it works. Do NOT continue if all your camera not working well at this step, it’s useless.
    2. Using SPMultiport tools or SPFlashtool flash the cwm for this device.
    3. Using cwm, now flash your custom rom you want. The camera settings will stick.

And here is to fix the wifi cannot turn on problem :
After flashing the rom picopad_gfi_20121206_jfdesignnet_6628_201212_0934 and you found your wifi no longer work, then your device must be from version 20121026, flash again using picopad_gfi_20121206_jfdesignnet_6620_201212_0952, your wifi will work after that.
    vice versa :
After flashing the rom picopad_gfi_20121206_jfdesignnet_6620_201212_0952 and you found your wifi no longer work, then your device must be from version 20121027, flash again using picopad_gfi_20121206_jfdesignnet_6628_201212_0934, your wifi will work after that.

    hope it helps …

  • I open my note and here is the camera configuration for GFI :

    20121026 device :
    back camera : ov5647
    front camera : gc0329_yuv
    LCD : MD060001TRAN

    20121027 device :
    back camera : mt9p017_raw
    front camera : gc0329_yuv
    LCD : MD060007TDAN

Use above data during flash the stock ROM to fix camera issue using SP MultiportFlash Tool.
and before you asking me, no … i don’t have the program, and i don’t do winblows 😀 my friend do that for me 😀
if you really need it, google for SP MultiportFlash Tool at xda or ask itclinic.

    Hope it helps …

  • inoenk

@jf, the script build for this gfi, and its work on stock rom and in your custrom 4.0.4 as well..
Hopefully this script also coming for jb..

  • Maybe a little tip for those who can’t root with bin4ry method, like myself after flashing JB. Here are my steps (of course doing in linux box is much recommended, because we have more control, ie command completion, shell history, etc):
    1. flash cwm recovery using flash tool
    2. enter recovery mode (power+up)
    3. connect with pc via usb cable
    5. via adb, go to shell and mount the /system, because you are root with all read/write permission
    4. go ahead with adb to push ‘superuser.apk’ and ‘su’ into their respective locations, eg /system/app and /system/bin
    5. change mode the ‘su’ into 4755, and reboot

CWMR really is an awesome tool, here we can do alot more trick, ie backup some important data, and restore it, because it’s only some familiar commands (mount, tar, cp, etc)

    • @smich
Thank you smich for the tips 😀
I agree with you, if you got cwm then you are the master of the universe 😀
The hardest part is building the custom cwm specifically for the device, the extract and repack original recovery.img and build into working cwm for the device sometimes make my head hurts 😀
i want to share some nice writing from a guy who makes the process looks so easy … hehehe … http://goo.gl/17xCI

  • Richard

    @jf
    After I install rom picopad_gfi_20121206_jfdesignnet_6628_201212_0934 or picopad_gfi_20121206_jfdesignnet_6620_201212_0952.
When I turn on the device, keep looping at the logo.
Please advice how to solve this problem.
    Regards,

  • Hi Richard,

did you flash the jellybean custom rom from ics one ? you cannot do that without repartitioning first. Somehow the partition on ics version and the jellybean version is different.
custom rom cannot partitioning your device, you must use jelly bean stock rom (read sammy’s link share above) first, to repartitioning the device using SPMultiport Flashtool program (don’t forget to match the camera type !)
After success then install cwm again and then flash the custom rom at last.

    hope you succeed.

  • Sammy

@jf I finally got everything working back again. so far your ROM is the best i could find.
I’m still looking for additional script to repartition the internal storage which is pretty much useless.
    500mb system is too low…
the older script is working for 4.0.4 ICS, but not for 4.1.1. I wonder if you could modify to work for 4.1.1

  • @sammy
yipeeeee … i’m glad you sorted out sammy 😀

so far your ROM is the best i could find.
i’m taking it as compliment, thanks Sammy.
i’m old, not creating this to seek for fame, i just want to inspiring the younger as starter … c’mon … android is exciting, opensource is awesome … learn something new, create new custom rom to share and make indonesia proud 🙂

I’m still looking for additional script to repartition the internal storage which is pretty much useless.
    500mb system is too low…
the older script is working for 4.0.4 ICS, but not for 4.1.1. I wonder if you could modify to work for 4.1.1

    yeah, same as inoenk’s said.
btw, yesterday i found the repartition script you mention somewhere at xda, take a look at it and jump to conclusion it cannot be use on this jb rom.
They use hardcoded EBR1 (extended partition tables) to rewrite the original tables, it will not work on 4.1.1 because the partition length is different with the old 4.0.3 … worse … i don’t understand how to edit that EBR1 … 🙂
I go my own way by manually partitioning using parted just like on my old script, but so far … still no luck, my friend who got the device reported it will cause bootloop … 🙁
however … i will debug again, and share if succeed.

    Happy new year everybody !

  • Richard

    Could any body helping me.
    I lost my IMEI . . .

    Thank you

  • philips

i have a problem, my picopad GFI stack at axioo logo..n now i just can log into cmw..this problem start when i tried to install 2,5g partition. i lost 2g memori.
i need original stock rom to reflashing..where i can download it ??

    tenkyu for helping..

  • @jf: yeh you’re right…, I’ve done manually fdisk/parted from within cwm to do my custom partition scheme, meh, it’s overwritten with ebr, or sometimes even worse: bootloop. The key here is EBR1 file to flash, i think it holds info of /data and /emmc partitions, but after more hex dumping, nothing says 0B fs type for fat, all is 83 (ext fs). Here are the shoot:
Note: right of arrow is mount point I got from comparing `df` and sectors size

    MBR: x86 boot sector;
    partition 1: ID=0x5, starthead 0, startsector 32, 4294967295 sectors;
    partition 2: ID=0x83, starthead 0, startsector 44096, 10240 sectors; —> secro
    partition 3: ID=0x83, starthead 0, startsector 67392, 1622016 sectors; —> system
    partition 4: ID=0x83, starthead 0, startsector 1691456, 1048576 sectors, —> cache
    code offset 0x0

    EBR1: x86 boot sector;
    partition 1: ID=0x83, starthead 0, startsector 2742048, 1048576 sectors; —> data
    partition 2: ID=0x83, starthead 0, startsector 3792672, 4291174623 sectors, -> internal
    code offset 0x0

so It’s clear that for EBR1 we just need to flip the size, but doing that is beyond my cap (yet)…..

  • HELL YEAH! Finally got it works: 2GB /data and 316MB /emmc. Steps and howto here: http://solie.blog.undip.ac.id/2013/01/02/repartition-internal-storage-for-axioo-gfi-jellybean/

  • Sammy

    @smich Great info!
Just downloaded and flashed it. Now we have a fully optimal working picopad.

@jf, in case you haven’t realize it, those who flashed your custom rom will have your imei number in their devices.

for those who lost their imei number, you can use special apps like PICOpadIMEIWriter-1.0.0.apk
just google it. or you can follow one of methods described here: http://chinagizmos.blogspot.com/2012/10/imei-problems-backup-restore-no-service.html

  • Hi all! I have some question here:

    1. Is SP Multiport Tools similar with SP FlashTools?
    2. My PicoPad 6 still using ICS 4.0.4, so how do I upgrade it to stock Jelly Bean 4.1.1?
    3. ICS partition different with Jelly Bean, am I need to re partition it to install JB and how to do that?

    Thanks for your share.

    • Hi Mazzel,

try to read the comments above, your answer is there.

  • @sammy: another way to save imei is using mobileuncle tools, or just copy all files/folders in /data/nvram/md/NVRAM/NVD_IMEI before doing update, and i think this jf’s custom rom shouldn’t overwrite these files, ‘coz all i saw was just /system and /data/app, also nothing overwriting imei in updater_script file… but dunno if package_extract_dir(“data”, “/data”) is wiping all data…

So, here is what I read from updater:
    1. empty /tmp
    2. copy needed tools in /reparted to /tmp
    3. make/format ext4 filesystem and mount in /system
    4. extract/copy content to /system
    5. setting permission on /system, /etc, adding su, etc
    6. mount /data
    7. extract data contents into /data
    8. updating boot.img
    9. done

  • @sammy and smich :
no. it’s not possible, imei number were save on NVRAM partition. my custom rom does not contain any nvram data.

just read your comment, thanks for the info with repartition.
I create my version for repartition PICOpad GFI into 2Gb here :
    http://www.jfdesignnet.com/?p=2657

  • I’ve downloaded Stock Rom 4.1.1 from @Sammy but this is tar file, how to install it? As I know SP flash tools is only read img file.

  • Sammy

@Mazzel just extract all files, its gzip tar, you can use free software like 7zip.
once extracted, you will have a folder with same name, contains all files of stock rom.
using SPF Tools, load the scatter file, then you can flash anything you want

  • @Sammy I’ve just repartition my internal card to 2,5GB and have CWM recovery on. Am I need to change the partition back to default and flash everything or just the system?

You are people very helpful, I don’t believe it this is a blog. It’s like a little forum here. lol.

  • Sammy

@Mazzel yes, you need to re-format the partition. ICS 4.0.4 partition structure is different with JB 4.1.1 (please read upper comments).
After you full flash to upgrade to stock 4.1.1, flash a CWM recovery (seek the link in upper comments), then you can flash this custom ROM.
You’re just lucky, there’s new update to modify internal partition to maximize 2gb space, also in this blog.

  • Well I’m success to upgrade from ICS to JB stock. But still fighting with SP Multiport to fix the camera issue. And why did my WiFi is failed too? What is wrong?

  • @Mazzel: about cam, read very carefully what jf said above… just klik dropdown, and you’re done. flashing can be done with flash_tool since it’s more simple to do.

    About wifi, do these
    1. mount /system rw via root explorer or shell
2.a. connect usb, run adb shell from pc (from command)
    2.b. write: su [enter] —> gain superuser/root
    3. write: cp /system/lib/modules/wlan_mt6628.ko /system/bin/ [enter]
    4. write: rm /system/lib/modules/wlan.ko [enter]
    5. write: ln -s /system/bin/wlan_mt6628.ko /system/lib/modules/wlan.ko [enter]
    6. done, you may reboot gfi

or, easier method using root explorer:
    1. mount /system rw
    2. go to /system/lib/modules
    3. delete wlan.ko
    4. copy wlan_mt6628.ko into wlan.ko
    5. reboot phone, if wifi still failed, delete wlan.ko again and instead copy wlan_mt6620.ko into wlan.ko

  • norm

Have same camera and wifi problem, I used SP MDT V3.1216.02 but when i press unlock button there is no such driver as @JF notes in dropdown list (there is only ov5647_raw for rear camera & MD060_007TDAN for LCD, since my GFI is 20121026 release, so thats not the correct ones ).
@Smich, what SP MDT version you use to fixed this problem? if any link would be helpfull….
in the SP MDT right menu, there is type, what shoul i chose.. firmware update, format all or other??
in the USB port, boot rom or preloader?
after finished chose the correct driver and menu? press start all?
    thanks in advance

  • @smich and sammy … whoa … you’re both nice guy, thank you very much for helping others.
    really appreciate that 🙂

@norm and mazeel … sorry i cannot support you on the flashing tool process since i don’t have it, so … you both better listen to smich and sammy … 🙂 i hope you can fix all the troubles.

  • @norm: fortunately mine is 20121027 release, so notes from @jf is very usefull. Dunno with 26 release… so please try every possible values, anyway just 3 values to try :D. Remember, for the sake of easiness, just use sp mdt to change the driver, and continue to flash using usual sp flash_tool, again you need only flash the preloader and uboot, so it would be very quick….

You need SP MDT only to unlock and choose the driver, so it’s pretty safe to ignore all other checkbox or dropdown, once you click the select/dropdown, automatically you change the driver, and saved to uboot/preloader, no need any further step, just exit SP MDT, and continue with sp flash_tool.

For the link sorry I’m forgot where I got it from, somewhere from xda developer, but you can try googling with keyword: “SP_MDT software fot flashing.rar” or you can try a link from narod.ru from this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31019980

  • norm

    @smich
thanks for your kind repply, as you said.. trying another options and done for the camera problem..
    just installing custom rom..

  • norm

Finally I have JB cosrom w/ 2.1gb phone storage on my GFI..
Thanks everybody, Jf, Sammy, Smich God bless you..

  • @Smich. I’m stuck on flashing, I put the camera driver code from the note above. Pressing start all, count is running but nothing happens. Where did I get wrong. I ‘m sure all the MTK drivers was installed well.

  • Congratulation @norm! Can you show how to flash it. Please… 😀

  • norm

@Mazzel, just like JF & Smich said, after flashing stock rom with SP Flash tool, fixed camera problem with SP MDT tool,
First, open the SP MDT tool, load the scatter file in the stock rom folder and select the driver (back, front camera & lcd)… after select the driver you dont need anything to do with SP MDT tool, just open the SP Flash tool and select scatter file in stock rom folder. desellect all except uboot, flash with press download button and then connect your GFI. After reboot your GFI, check your camera, if not fixed yet, try to another driver combination.
You can follow this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33113980 for better explanation
    Good Luck

  • Congratulation @norm, glad to hear you sorted it out, and thanks for helping Mazzel with the walkthrough … GBU too.

@mazzel, don’t give up 🙂 even my friend who expert in winblows things sometimes really desperate with this flashing mess, I saw him once clearing all the device driver using safe mode and reinstalling again all the mtk drivers in normal mode and solve the problem.
i just hope you also succeed.

  • jfdesign : Thanks for your motivation. I’ll never give up. Because it’s my only phone. 😀

    I keep on trying.

  • Norm : What driver you pick for your device? I think I have same device release date.

  • norm

@Mazzel, I just trying the easiest way, i’m trying both @JF drivers note and work.. and dont bother with wifi problem, after you flash with custom rom, its solved itself…

  • Well Done. My camera is back! Now I have to flash CWM recovery and install the Custom ROM. Anyway I use this driver and it work.

    back camera : mt9p017_raw
    front camera : gc0329_yuv
    LCD : MD060007TDAN

Thanks Norm, I will update what the result next.

  • norm

    Yeah.. Well done @Mazzel..

  • Finally I’ve done everything. But I’d like to change DPI resolution. Is there a way to modified this custom ROM because 200 DPI is to large for my young eyes. 😀

When on ICS, I can change it to 180 DPI. And it’s fit to me. But when I try the method on this custom ROM. I’m stuck on bootlogo. Any suggestion?

  • Sammy

@Mazzel congrats on your successful. you can use apps like “Pimp My ROM” to change LCD Density (is that the same as DPI resolution?)

  • Hendroid

Already tried both version, because couldn’t identified release version. But still facing bootloop problem. Have any solution for this. Thanks.

  • Billy

    @jfdesign:

everything is working :D, but wifi sometime cannot detecting, and i can’t press install if i want to install .apk on the sd card. i used on 20121026 release.

    • Hi Billy, thanks for the feedback.
about the wifi i’m not sure if i can help, too many possibilities.
for the disabled install button did you already enable unknown sources on settings page?

  • Billy

    @jfdesign:

yes, i already enable unknown sources on setting page.
it just i can’t press it, i change to lanscape / potrait it’s the same.

  • Sammy

@billy: did u use screen filter apps? sometimes it give that problems

  • Billy

    @sammy :
    yes , i did.
    thank’s a lot sammy, that’s fixing my problem lol….
1 problem fixed , only wifi problem now 😀

    • whoa … amazing sammy 🙂 thanks for chime in. i thought you already forget us 🙂

@billy: can you be more specific with what you said in “sometime cannot detecting”

  • Billy

    @jfdesign:

when i used ics, in my room i got 2-3 bar wifi signal, but in JB i got only 1 bar or signal is gone.
when the conection on idle sometime wifi is turning off it self, in my setting i keep wifi on during sleep.

  • tukull

To u guys on JB ROM with wifi problem, try this :

turn on wifi, then followed by turning on bluetooth

only then u can connect to secured wifi routers.

bluetooth must stay ON even when the device goes to sleep mode, otherwise it will not connect.

  • Billy

    @tukull:
sadly not working for me, sometime the wifi still turning off it self 🙁
when it says wifi not in range, i must restart my device.

    • @billy: i don’t have the device with mt6620 wifi right now, so i cannot test, but i do test with 20121026 release device during custom rom creation, the wifi working normally although the router is next to me 🙂
did you already doing wipe data / factory reset after flashing the custom rom from the stock rom ?
and also try this : http://goo.gl/eJU55 it’s worth a try.

  • emskie

After flashing the phone with stock 4.1.1 rom for picopad gfi
    http://sdrv.ms/Yj15z7

The phone wont turn on, no response at all…. I thought it’s dead.

But If I flash back to old firmware, it’s alive again.

Im flashing the stock using SP Flash Tool.

  • Sammy

@emskie you must full format the rom, not just download. ICS 4 have different scatter file with JB 4.1. Load the 4.1.1 scatter file from stock rom, select format, then plugged in the device. after succesfull format, unplug the device, load the scatter file again, this time choose download, then plug the device again.
once successfull, you’ll have 4.1.1 device

  • Billy

    @jfdesign:
    lol….
that apps help a bit, but when idle wifi turn off it self, but not helping with the range on wifi connection, i looked on xda dev. , samsung s3 has the same problem like that on JB. Maybe i’ll wait another release on JB version.

@smich, @sammy, @jf, and all GFI user, there is FB grup for this HH, pls joint to share tuts and your experience to improve this HH.

@jf i need your permission to share your custrom in this group.
    Thanks in advance

    • hello norm, i don’t have facebook and never want to join in, so i think i’ll pass that and stay here.
but thank you very much to let me know and really appreciate your permission request, yes you had my permission to re-share there.
like i always said, i create the rom just for fun and share here because i want to. 🙂 I really don’t know that there will be a question and answer as many of these, and yes, this wordpress comments are sucks, facebook or google+ would be perfect for this.
i also thank you for smich, sammy, norm, tukull for willing to help others even with this poor wordpress comments interface, i appreciate that.

      Cheers all.

  • ndd

thanks for your custom rom, i’m currently flashing your custom rom with mt6620, the wifi is working good, but the bluetooth, FM , GPS did not work. how can i fix it ?, ( sorry for bad english ).

    • hi ndd, you’re welcome. All hardware are working good at the time i test the custom rom, if not i will certainly write it down on my post.
Honestly, i never heard bt, FM and GPS malfunction after using the custom rom.
Try to test with phone tester, Zdevicetest or GPSTest from playstore.

  • Hi All,

I receive many negative comments about this article on my inbox.
If you feel my custom rom is useful, then use it, if not, just flash back the stock rom, you’ve got nothing to lose.
There is not even a donation button on my page, right ? so no need to insult others.

I think i have enough with this custom rom thread, i close the comments from now on.

      1. I will NOT change the language to indonesian, grow up and get over it.
      2. I ALREADY TEST my custom rom on the PICOpad GFI device at the time i create them, all hardware WORKING NORMALLY, including 20121026 and 20121027 version release. wifi, bluetooth, 3G, camera back/front, fm radio, etc, etc, … you name it.

      and also don’t forget :
      3. Please read the comments before asking, many problem were already solved by others on the thread.

  • Yes, a lot of nice people than the jerk who always complain about your hardwork 😀
We need more chef for this device :p

    •  thanks Billy 🙂
Let’s forget it, i’m ok now, how is your wifi reception ? still bad ?
did you ever try to connect to another access point to check ?
maybe it just keep disconnecting because the access point isn’t compatible ?

      •  Sadly, Yes.
I had two AP, result is the same, my AP is TP link and Belkin. I re-flash everything still the same. No problem i used your ICS Custom Rom, it’s good no problem at all 😀

        •  then it must be a different type of wifi between my sample device and yours because it’s working normally on mine (i also ask my friend who got the old device 20121026 about his wifi reception, he said it was ok and never had a problem using the custom rom)

the internal peripheral (wifi/bt module, camera, lcd) on the axioo picopad sometime were change by the vendor silently on the next shipment without informing the axioo RnD team. maybe this is the culprit.
so … i suggest all of you to back up the rom before doing any custom rom flashing avoiding any bad circumstances.

    one quick question,

    – can we add dolby mobile audio enhancement built-in to those ROMs ? this device’s built-in speakers kinda suck.

    • you can add Rakun Audio, more smaller size, made in indonesia and make the EQ on every sound you had 😀

    •  Hmmm … interesting.
I’m not trying to be skeptical, but does it needs a special hardware for that ?
I mean, it must have a dolby patented audio decoder chipset so the kernel could take advantage of it and have a module loaded.
If yes, then I need the source code, any link? Google results nothing for this mtk6577 chipset.

Or … did you mean it just an applications level audio  enhancement? Just like on SRS dolby?
If yes, then it must be a matter of browsing the playstore.

hi… i appreciate with you hard work. hhmmm, can i get the JB stock rom for my GFI?

    •  hi Indra Kurniawan, thanks.
i can give you the direct link, but only cause you some troubles because you will run into difficulties setting up the whole things like camera type and wifi / bt issue.

You have to read the comments thread from the beginning. At the top of this comments section, choose “Sort by older first” and read carefully especially for version release and camera type part.

      Briefly steps :
      1. You have to know the software version of your device before flashing anything.
      2. Find stock rom jb 4.1.1 by sammy and get it.
      3. flash the stock rom and adjust the camera and lcd type using spmultiport
      4. Flash the cwm
      5. Flash the custom rom

  • Hi Jfdesignet.. finally i found you ‘again’ after a few years ago i installed Klixs Linux at my Axioo Notebook :). Well know i have this article and sucessfully upgrade my GFI to your Jelly Bean Custom Rom, but later i found some of important app cannot installed / upgradeable to this rom from Google Play such as Google Search(now), hootsuite, adobe air, etc. The google play said these app is not compatible with the device or somekind like that.

How can i fix it jfdesign ? is it a bugs or something else ?

    • hello brother! long time no see 🙂 … yeah it’s a good memory back in the days discussing klixs linux. 🙂

the problem why playstore always complaining with incompatible device is because i change the dpi of the device thus playstore cannot recognize it. worst, i forgot to include into the custom rom.
On the latest release of my custom rom i already include this.

I’m creating the patch for MultiDPI playstore hack for you : http://ge.tt/1coKSzb/v/0
      Follow this steps :
      1. Download and copy the zip into your ext sdcard
      2. Go to recovery mode, choose install zip, select the zip file above, and after done, choose reboot.
      3. After reboot, go to Settings -> apps -> all and clear cache the Playstore and GoogleServiceFramework
      4. Go to Settings -> Accounts -> Delete your gmail account
      5. Reboot
      6. Open playstore and fill it in again your gmail account.
Now you can install anything you want with the hacked playstore.

I don’t know what variant device of yours, but you may also look into the latest release of this picopad GFI custom rom :

I have jelly bean custom room on my picopad 6. There are super user logo but i can’t use it. i can’t use titanium backup, etc. Warning ” BusyBox works but the “SU” command does not elevate to root. There’s some thing wrong with your “SU” binary and/or “super user” app. Can you help me?

    • sure, try mine : http://www.mediafire.com/download/ai58skh7rjgzdo1/signed_superuser-1.0.1.8.zip
Save that to your sdcard, go to your cwm/twrp recovery and flash them.
Do not wipe anything and reboot after done. There will be a latest Superuser on your apps.

      • Indra kurniawan

Still error. warning ” please verify that your ROM is rooted and included BusyBox, and try again. This attempt was made using the “/system/bib/su”command. My ROm is from yours.

        • i’m adding busybox into it, try again with this : http://www.mediafire.com/download/m2p5udc1m1grgcv/signed_superuser-1.0.1.8-busybox.zip
surely you’re not using my customrom because i always include busybox on mine.
if still not succeed, you have to ask the rom creator.

Still the same. Error. My ROM was Downloaded from this web. I tried to flashing with ICS ROM from your web too, but my wifi can’t active so i re flashing with jelly bean again. Do you have any suggestion? Please..

          • hmmm … then must be something bad happen to your rom.
what the original stockrom build of your device? did you already tried factory reset? the more you give me the detail, the easier i can give you a solution.
i’m afraid you have to reflash the whole rom using spflashtool to fix this mess.
If you’re device using mt6620 type wlan, then use my custom rom in spmdt format, you can find the custom rom in spmdt format on the bottom of this article : http://www.jfdesignnet.com/?p=2933

            try this also :
            1. Reboot into recovery
            2. wipe cache and dalvik cache
            3. factory reset
            4. flash again the jelybean rom for your device

          • Indra kurniawan

How do i know my picopad using mt6620 type wlan or other? Before install ROM i wipe data, cache, and dalvik like your command at tutorial. I have already read your article about

custom ROM PICOpad GFI with mt6620 chipset update 130313 but i dont understand how to back up my imei and camera using twrp. I’m using CWM to flashing my picopad 6. If i dont back up my imei or camera, is it safe?

and at you last web, you said “Here is the custom rom in SPMDT format :” what the meaning of SPMTD?

          • if you’re using my custom rom with mt6620 in the name, and after you flash your wifi is dead, then your device must be using mt6628 type of wlan.

SPMDT means : SmartPhone Multiport Download Tools. It’s a program that run under winblows os, to flash the stock rom base on MTK series, which had capability to set the camera type before flashing the whole rom.
Because this tools using bit by bit copying from each image into coresponding partition, then the possibility to fail is near zero. it’s different than flashing rom via recovery which still using common file copying methods.

          • hi Indra, sorry, i mistype something during creating the update.zip with busybox before. I re-create the root update zip here : http://www.mediafire.com/download/afg441kio0s9fma/signed_superuser-1.0.1.8-busybox.zip
please try again would you ? and sorry for my mistake.

My phone was flashed 3 times. Still the same. Trouble at rooting. How do i know my phone has mt6620 type wlan? i have already read your article

custom ROM PICOpad GFI with mt6620 chipset update 130313, but i dont understand how to back up my imei and camera using twrp. I’m using CWM to flashing my phone before. is it safe if i don’t back up my imei and camera?

          • did you ever success flashing one of my custom rom ? if yes, which one ? from the version you flash, i can determine your device is using mt6620 or mt6628.
if this is your first time you flash my custom rom and don’t succeed, we have a bigger problem since i cannot see your device. 🙂

I suggest you to backup the settings before flashing other rom because if something bad happen, you don’t have to flash the whole rom to fix that. just flash the twrp version just exactly the same way with your cwm version. better safe than sorry.

        • i’m adding busybox into it, try again with this : error
surely you’re not using my customrom because i always include busybox on mine.
if still not succeed, you have to ask the rom creator.

Do you ever try to porting touchwish from samsung or sense from HTC to your picopad 6’s OS?

    • No Indra, I never too interested adding many customization on my custom roms. the more i customizing, the more trouble in maintaining the revision. I like to keep it everything simple and stable as stock os.
Besides, I already give you the rooted custom rom right ? everything is opened now, soo … why not customizing and adding the touchwiz or sense by yourself ? 🙂
c’mon young man, learn something new, do a little research, find some resource on xda and do it yourself, i promise you, it’s really fun. 🙂
